Cyber-Hacks Rules and Procedures

[Last updated on: Wed Oct 29  6:11:27 1997]

Cyber-Hacks is an informal critique, discussion and announcement list for all writers--from the budding neophyte to the seasoned professional.  Our primary purpose is to create a low-key forum where we can network with other writers and help each other become not only better at our craft, but both published and *PAID* for our work.

Amateurs are welcome--even if you never wish to be published. I'll bet before long, you change your minds!  ;-)

Rules:

There are no rules (yet).  ;-)

Procedures:

        1. We no longer need to put "C-H:" on the "Subject:" line.

Well, I'm a strong proponent for visually filterable subject lines, so I've asked that submissions to the Cyber-Hacks list be preceded with "C-H:" on the "Subject:" line (see above).  It just made it easier for those of us who get loads of mail a day to handle it.  Now my listserver has been changed to Majordomo, and this is all being done automatically for me!.

        2.  Since we will be dealing with multiple genera, when submitting work for critique, please include an identifier for literary category until such time as volume dictates splitting this into sub-lists.

I suggest:

etc.  Books and longer fiction don't e-mail well.  I suggest sending a couple of chapters with a brief introduction and ask for members to contact you off-list for the rest.  I hope to have an FTP site available soon for exchanging those (probably on a password basis for author's protection).

        3.  Please try to save (and send) your manuscripts as ASCII (plain) text or HTML.  Imbedding them in your message is even better.  For formatted items, when you attach them, include some clue in the description as to what they're saved as (WP6 for WordPerfect 6.x, MSWord-Mac, etc.).  Remember, many people are wary of viruses and will automatically delete all attachments, unread.  It's always best to include documents in the body of your message.

        4.  Since we've opened up to the wide world, I'm restricting distribution of member's names for security purposes.  To reach everyone, post to Cyber-Hacks@UserHome.com and everyone will get it.

        5.  Postings can be to the list, or privately to selected individuals.  After all, this isn't a control thing (See "Rules", above)--and some of this stuff can get damned personal.   A shy poet. f'rinstance may choose to only submit to someone who has shown extreme sensitivity (guess that lets you and me out, eh, Dawnne? ;-).

        6.  Please respect the dignity of the other authors.  No "Flames" or I'll dump you.  (Well, maybe there *is* a rule, after all).  If an author requests responses be "private" (directly to them and not the list)--well that's cool, and we should all respect that.  If you're going to kill my pet monkey, I might not want to watch every one else eat it.  ;-p

        7.  Anyone who offers special services (editing, typing, graphics arts, etc.) are welcome to post their services, prices, and/or URLs to the list.  We're all here to help each other. Blatant advertising of *Writing Related* goods and services *IS* allowed--if done tastefully and in moderation.  Non-writing-related posts are discouraged and general hustles are banned (and may result in your being summarily un-subscribed).

        8.  There is currently no word limit (min or max), nor genre restrictions.  All submitted manuscripts must be your original work unless you are specifically forwarding (and labeling as such) other writer's work as part of a "fair use" dingus (ok, so words failed me!).

        9.  Feel free to comment, critique and generally rip apart this document, and/or make suggestions for additions or clarifications.

       10.  You are not allowed to reproduce what you read here without the author's specific permission.  Many posts include this permission.  If you want to show copies to friends, classes, etc. first ask the *original* author--and tell them exactly what you want to use their material for.  This is important for revision tracking as well as copyright protection.  You *may* print yourself a copy for easier/later reading, but can't distribute it.  Of course, you can quote original messages, when replying, silly!  ;-)

       11.  ON LURKING:  There is *NO* requirement to participate actively.  "Lurkers" are welcome.  Feel free to just enjoy your listmate's writings and discussions.  They will more than likely inspire you to write something else yourself...and that's what we're here for--to help each other become better, *published* writers.

       12.  I'll post announcements of markets, contests, Website URLs and other items that I think might interest other writers.  I encourage each of you to do the same.

       13.  If the critique and discussion traffic gets too much for you, but you'd still like to get the announcements, just tell me and I'll put you on the "Announcements Only" list.

       14.  A daily digest form of this list (one composite message per day) is available by sending a message to

     Cyber-Hacks-digest-request@UserHome.com

...and including the phrase

     subscribe cyber-hacks

...on the first line of the *body*.  If you use a signature, add the word

     end

...on the second line.  If you're already on the list and want to convert to daily digests, make the first line of the body:

     set cyber-hacks digest

...or

     set cyber-hacks nodigest

...to go from digest to regular (live) postings.

         15.  Since the words "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" are keywords to Majordomo, you can't use them in the first 15 words or so of your message, or it will bounce.  If you *must* use them, either use 15 lines of filler or try using "s*bscribe" and "uns*bscribe" instead.  Majordomo's not *that* smart!  ;-)

       16.  When replying to or forwarding another message, please crop the superfluous information from your messages.  Leave enough of the original so that we know *what* you're replying to, but delete as many lines a s possible that have nothing to do with your comments--especially old signature blocks and that wordy "footer" of mine about copyrights and unsubscribing--the list will add a new one when you post. ;-)

Thanks, and Welcome!
